Pacific Lutheran University

For more than a decade the English Department at Pacific Lutheran University has featured a program that introduces students to the technical, aesthetic, commercial, and cultural elements involved in publishing books and periodicals. One aspect of the program explores design principles through hand-printed studio projects conducted at the Elliot Press, the University’s studio-laboratory. The Art of the Book I is a comprehensive studio course which teaches the fundamentals of book design and typography using fine materials and hand processes to create a variety of printed texts. The Art of the Book II develops individual projects to explore further possibilities of fine book making.
