The LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies:Print Shop Manager

The LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at the Columbia University School of the Arts is seeking to fill the Print Shop Manager position.

Reporting to the Artistic Director of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, the incumbent oversees the production of artists’ prints in the professional print shop and is responsible for the safe operation of all print shops of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies (“Center”) including safe usage of equipment and chemicals, student and staff training and supervision, equipment maintenance, and smooth operation of workshops.

The Print Shop Manager will oversee general day-to-day operations of shop—working with University Facilities staff and other Columbia departments to maintain space; coordinate professional and highly skilled maintenance, manage the operations and fine-tuning of sensitive print shop equipment, including the Center’s Offset Lithography Press, Brand Etching Press, Brand Automated Lithography Press, Universal X2-Superspeed Laser System. S/he will order all materials and supplies for the professional and student print shops: select and order inks, acetates, acids, solvents, paper, experimental materials and other supplies and material required for operation of high quality professional print shop; coordinate contracting and scheduling with artists and contract printers; facilitate contract printers’ use of shop and available materials, and orient them to shop procedures; act as liaison between contract printers and the Center’s Director.

The incumbent will act as liaison with Environmental Health & Safety, Fire Safety and Columbia University Facilities departments to ensure the smooth operation of the program and compliance with OSHA, EPA, and NYC fire department regulations and other applicable health and safety standards. S/he will manage chemical safety program including organizing, scheduling and conducting safety training classes for students, staff and adjunct faculty, chemical inventory, Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS), chemical labeling, use, storage and disposal and will conduct regular inspections of tools and equipment and ensure safety equipment (e.g., eyewash, fire extinguisher, overhead safety shower, dust collection system) and machine guards are present and in proper working condition. Make recommendations for any safety upgrades and advise on equipment, tool and material replacement. S/he will create and maintain clear signage about safe use of equipment and written guidelines for use of the shops.

The Print Shop Manager will supervise LeRoy Neiman Student Fellows, LeRoy Neiman student interns, and contract printers.

Qualifications:

A BA/BFA or equivalent experience is required as well as two years of related experience with background in intaglio, lithography, silkscreen and relief printing.

The successful candidate will have experience in running safety training workshops, and knowledge of OSHA, EPA and NYC Fire Department and workshop safety protocols. S/he must have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, be able to work collaboratively in realizing ambitious print projects with professionals at the highest level and to encourage and develop skills and talents of younger artists. Demonstrated computer literacy and experience with graphic programs is also required.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess an MFA and teaching experience at college level MFA preferred.
