Plants & Platens 2-Day Workshop, Platen Press, WA May 5 – 6

Two-day workshop, Saturday and Sunday May 5 – 6
Taught by Carl Montford @ School of Visual Concepts, Seattle, WA $325

Take a trip back and explore typography at its roots—literally. Seattle printer and engraver Carl Montford will lead you through the process of creating a print in the style of “herbals” published as early as the 15th century. These historical reference books consisted of wood engravings of plants and information about their medicinal use.
On the first day, you’ll make an engraving and set your own type by hand. On the second day, we’ll print the compositions on SVC’s Reliance iron handpress, a 19th-century antique restored by Montford and Russ Wiecking. Each workshop participant will take home at least one copy of the end product. The block and print will remain in the possession of the artist, and participants will also receive a souvenir booklet documenting the restoration of the Reliance.

This will be a two-day workshop with lunch included on both days.

All instructions, blocks, and tool will be provided—and don’t worry, no experience in printing or engraving is necessary.
