Casting leads on a Super caster

A number of people, including our interns, have asked how the various aspects of casting work. So, I’ve started making a few videos and, as I happened to have some leads to cast, it made sense to start with that.

It might pass a few spare minutes over lunch.

Nicely done!

It’s the best illustration I’ve seen of Monotype’s fusion-casting process, which is in principle entirely different from the continuous casting process of the Elrod.

I look forward to your next casting video. The only thing I might suggest adding would be an overall shot of what the machine as a whole looks like, for the benefit of those who have never seen one.

Ah ha. Thanks for that; I thought that a video on casting type might be more interesting to watch, and would have more of an overview. But, of course, I had the idea of making the videos when the lead equipment was on the caster :)

I’ll bear that in mind for the next one, though- thanks, David.

UGH.. duplicate post!

What is the thinnest strip material your machine can cast? And does it do leading AND type high rule?

Dan

Hi Dan; I’ve successfully cast 1pt, 1.5pt, 2pt, 3pt and 6pt leads; I believe we have all the necessary parts to cast 4pt, 8pt, 12pt and 18pt too, though I can’t personally see the need.

I’ve not cast any rules yet, as we tend to use brass rule when printing; again, though, I believe we have a large number of rule matrices, and the necessary parts to cast them. Probably.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like one heck of a machine.

It’s lovely :) I haven’t had occcasion to cast furniture on it, and I can’t imagine there will ever be a lot of demand, but that’s also possible. I’m sure, one day, I’ll want to try it out just for its own sake.

Should be casting some nice Floriated Caps next week (finally…) so I should have a chance to start another Super caster video.
