Davidson 251

Has anybody here ever used a Davidson 251 for embossing or numbering? I have a working one (with another almost complete one for spare parts) that I use for offset printing.

I believe to do numbering with an offset press you would need to have a recess machined into the plate cylinder where you wanted the number to fall on the printed sheet, which would basically destroy the press as an offset press for future use. Probably the same with embossing — the pressure required would probably damage the press for other uses.

I have a setup for an ab dick that allows you to number, perf and score on it, the unit fits in the opening of the cylinder. Where the davidson only has two cylinders I don’t know if it would work, will look at this unit and see if they say it can be used on a Davidson.

AdLibPress, the 251 is designed to offset, letterpress, emboss and number. You just need the right “segments” to do this. It is a 2 cylinder press with a plate segment and an impression segment on 1 cylinder and a blanket cylinder. I have only used it as an offset because that is the segments that came with it. To number or use it as a letterpress you have to detach the water unit and put on a different “segment” (basically a curved chase) then put your numbering machines or lead type on the chase. With that chase you can also do some embossing-just don’t put any ink in it.

dickg, I’m pretty sure that any attachment made for normal presses (3 cylinders) will not work. The 251 is pretty unique.

May not be possible Stateside, but Who Knows? Try Whittenberg maybe, but is believed that the Heidelberg G.T.O. single colour (later Models) had some of the above facilities incorporated.… Again and possibly, search/trawl, Heidelberg Offset/Letterset, there are some interesting posts on B.P. and elsewhere, (of no practical help to the point in question but thought provoking!)> > > HEIDELBERG OFFSET/LETTERSET KORD<<<

On the last *Knockings* the Monotype in *MONOPHOTO* format, did have input into and for the KORD, but we all went down the drain together, basically.?

Monotype,s LASERCOMP settles the issue for most of us.

Here are 2 pages out of the manual, anybody ever done this?
