Bowne & Co. Stationers

Bowne & Co., Stationers is a curatorial department of the South Street Seaport Museum. It is also a working print shop, a re-creation of a printing and stationery shop like those that were once abundant in and around the seaport district.

The museum includes a variety of iron hand presses, jobbing platens, various small pieces related to 19th century job printing and stationery, and a large collection of foundry type. Most presses are operational and are being used in the production of everything from invitations to limited edition fine press books. The presses are run in full view of the visiting public. Introductory classes in letterpress printing are held in fall and spring.
