A book beautiful to the eye and rich to the touch written by friend of Briar Press and noted printing historian Stephen O. Saxe. AIHP is an example of solid scholarship and graceful, informative writing. It addresses the history and development of the iron hand press in the 19th century, and the curious stories of each of the principal presses and press inventors of the time.
Featured within these pages are illustrations from the original wood engravings of the late John DePol, one of America’s finest wood engravers. The first edition of the book, limited to 180 copies, was printed by Neil Shaver at the Yellow Barn Press, Iowa. Reprints are available from Oak Knoll Books.
