Graphics

Hey everyone,

I am just starting out with my letterpress. I am always spending time looking around the internet at letterpressed invitations. I see all sorts of amazing graphics. Trees, vintage swirls, birds, nature scenes, flowers, etc. I cannot image that everyone is drawing these. I do know that dover offers a few books with some images but does anyone know of a good resource for graphics? Mostly for wedding invitations but also just for standard cards (thank yous, etc)?

Thank you so much

A lot of these are either standard graphic images supplied by Dover et al or available as dingbat type fonts.

Somewhat ubiquitous. Just make sure you are getting vector based images, or eps, rather than bitmapped. The Dover stuff isn’t the best in this regard. You have to search around. I’d look more in the font direction than the image.

It’s called clip art. There’s some commercial packages out there and they’re vector based graphics, sometimes color sometimes greyscale, sometimes line art. Most are editable EPS files though. The 400,000 one comes to mind. You can also look on a site like www.istockphoto.com and search for just vector images.

One thing that needs to be said when talking about clip art is a mention of copy right.
Some of the images out there are owned by some one and the owner need to be compensated or at least asked permission for the use of the image.

lscott - Many of the newer commercial printers that you see on the Internet do have backgrounds in graphic arts and many of them draw their own images. However, there are a lot of sources for free and paid vector images. You will need the EPS files or you will not be able to resize them for your particular needs without loss of quality.

There are over 600 EPS images in the Cuts & Caps section of Briar Press. Most are free for personal use. You may wish to try a few before purchasing collections or individual images.
