Lock ups…

I’d like to start a thread with images of interesting lock ups and, if possible, a bit of an explanation

We’ve finally gotten 220 v. in our studio so we could hook up our lead saw and very carefully trim all of our leading to very accurate lengths. I’ve often wondered how much more difficult the leading we were using made things when doing complicated pieces, using leading to build the architecture of a form.

We’ll start.

This was a poster / broadside we at Lead Graffiti produced for the attendees at the 2008 national conference of the American Printing History Association. Jill designed the main text which took about 4 hours to layout. I particularly like the “Y” made out of a V and ! and the “o” with the circumflex accent in the word “roof”. Ray did the lock up which took about 6 hours. The copper ink is handrolled onto the paper prior to printing.

One of the main problems was trying to keep the type square. Obviously the sizes are all over the place. There wasn’t much of a trick to what we did. We would just keep filling in and checking things generally with a t-square.

The piece was printed on a Vandercook Universal III in an edition of 125.

Wonderful poster (got any left?).

Is this the largest possible size photo that can be uploaded to Briar Press? Or could pix of lock-ups be bigger so we can more effectively marvel?

Go to this site. It is already set up for lockups.

Perhaps I should have said, I’d love to see some lock ups that make me want to spend an 8-hour day locking up type.

The flickr group had 116 photos. These are the ones I thought were worth looking at to help save the trouble of going through the other 106.
