Basel Paper Mill, Swiss Museum for Paper, Writing and Printing

In the middle of the 12th century the Cluniac monastery of St. Alban had a canal built to provide water power via water wheels for twelve mills. Ten of these mills were converted to paper mills during the course of the Middle Ages.
Since 1980 today’s Paper Museum has been housed in the Stegreif and the Gallician mills. The collections of the Basle Paper Mill comprise the technical and cultural development of paper, writing and printing.
Demonstrations are provided in typecasting, typesetting and bookbinding.
