Designing for letterpress/photopolymer plates

I’m looking for some resources or basic tips on designing for letterpress using photopolymer plates. Are there general rules about what works well and what doesn’t? Are there good books on this subject? Book making seems to be the subject of most letterpress design books I’ve seen recommended, but I’m interested in printing stationary or illustrations, so I’m not sure how applicable they would be. I don’t have a design background.

I’ve read the boxcar guidelines for sending files for plates, but I’m looking for advice about design. I’ve looked through discussion boards here and haven’t seemed to find much on this subject. Appreciate any comments!
