Ajax No 2 - advice/information please

I’ve just acquired a lovely little Ajax No 2 press. However, I *think* a piece is missing and just need to hear from someone with a working press. The problem is as follows: the cast oval piece (with the word Ajax cast into the top) that bolts in a vertical position to the main base is a quarter of an inch too close. There is insufficient clearance which means the two lugs on the folding down part hit this oval piece (when it is bolted tight to the base). Is something missing that would have increased the clearance between the vertical oval casting and the base…? Many thanks, Gordon
