Is this an Adana HS1?

I am fairly new to Adana presses and have had this little press for a while but am struggling to work out if this is an HS1 or indeed the earlier ‘toy’ version that people often talk about.

Can anyone help me identify it and also let me know if there should be a small spring attached to the pawl of if it should just hang freely. The ink plate does not always turn and I am wondering if there should be a spring in the small holes that I can see.

Without any Pics., almost certainly an H.S.1 But for a long long time there has been considerable discussion about H.S.1 or
3 x 2 terminology, apparently many Adana records went A.W.O.L. ??

The H.S.1 or the 3 x 2 is identify-able via several of the following} the Chase is 2 1/2” x 3 3/4” outside measurement,s… The *Bed* exactly accomodates the chase, but as the Original spiel states, the bed can be removed and used as a Full Out chase if needed, as the compound of the rollers always Span the Full out Type/Image area… The Platen proper with packing is Nominally 6” X 5” the serial number is normally stamped into the top, (to view) of the Platen proper in the order of 4 figures , i.e. 9471 (on sight now and others) No Prefix, No Suffix.

The impression handle is unusual (for Adana,s generally) in that, it is one piece only and terminates in a Steel roller riding against the back of the Platen Proper, and does with even modest use, wear the Diecast contact point on Impression… We solved that one a long time ago by making a small Steel slipper to take the wear… the ink disc pawl should be seen to be Double ended, for reversing, with wear, and can be sprung for return, but will still work without the spring, by force of gravity (the fulcrum is only a tiny % from either end), we also cut down the wear to both the Disc Ratchet teeth, and the finger, by just re making a new finger in much softer copper. and it was quieter in the middle of the night, doing *private jobs* at home,???

The steel made an annoying *Ting Ting Ting* the copper with a well rounded pawl was much more agreeable, Apparently,!!!

P.S. The next size up in the normal order of progression and manufacturing, is usually seen as the 5 x 3 ! . . the entire *bed & chase* (from 3 x 2, — H.S.1) would metaphorically fit inside the Chase of the 5 x 3.,

Claire, If You refer to Thomas,s beautifully scanned entry above, (Thomas Thank You, Mick) You can see my well corroborated ramblings,! including the shot on (scanned) page 31, where our modification from way back would have been, including the One piece imp. Handle, etc., plus a very good representation of the Fact (not conjecture or speculation) that Adana Rollers, across the Board, have the Rubber compound at considerably less than the diameter of the Trucks, as witness and On Sight at time of post,???

The H.S.1 OR 3” x 2” read out on a very accurate Caliper Vernier, Trucks at point (.810) eight one zero, the compound at point (.633) six three three, so by default the FIXED height Rails are point (.800) eight zero zero, . . Your Own Tarheel and Brayer Co. out of Clemmons N.C. will corroborate. If the need for replacement rollers crops up, hopefully not.

****The above DOES NOT follow a logical pattern across the rest of the Adana Range, i.e. AFTER, the H.S.1 or 3” x 2”, The 5” x 3”, The H.S.2 ” = 6” x 4”, The 8” x 5”, and The H.S,3 = 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” ALL have Non logical truck to compound ratios, by default NO corellation RAIL Height to compound diameter in ANY recognisable format, perhaps Mr Donald Aspinall was shrewd, or *hedging His bets* or maybe deterring the opposition, which as far as can be ascertained basically amounted to only ONE, in the U.K. namely *Ajax* who produced a M/c, with Parallel approach action, the concept was good, but failed because the main frame was not strong enough. ***

AJAX Master, on sight at time of post, welded up Main frame, but only used for Demo for the new Devotees to compare/assess, Clamshell V. Parallel Approach.

The chase measures 3 5/8” x 2 1/4 (outside measurements) and the Platen is indeed stamped but with 5 figures 10753.

The pawl is indeed double ended and I think does make a ting ting noise as you describe.

Could this be an earlier version of the HS1? Hopefully my pictures will load and it will be easier to identify.

@thomas thanks for the link. I had already downloaded that and after looking over it m still not convinced its an HS1.

It is an H/S1, the roller saddles are folded steel compared to the solid ones on the No2 H/S.
Also the gripper sticks out a long way on one side compared to the No2.
The disk does not always turn and the rollers do not always return to the bottom, the trick is to quickly release the handle after impression allowing the press to spring open.
In the first year of production the H/S1 had a strip of steel to turn the ink disk, this was changed to a proper pawl after that.

Claire Thank You, Yes the Pawl in steel form, does indeed make an annoying and incessant, Ting Ting Ting, in the middle of the night, in an Old Farmhouse, out in the Sticks, when those Darstardly Apprentices were, printing >Private Jobs,< with (Allegedly) Borrowed Type and equally, Borrowed/non returnable Ink !! So we believe.
As P.P. implies, yes Roller Saddles are folded steel, and the Original pawl finger was a strip of steel, later modified as implied.
One more prompted by P.P.s comment above, as with All Adana table tops, oiling the spindle for the Ink Disc often gets overlooked, (steel stub in Alloy boss very prone to seizing up) so we remove the Ink disc and just file a >flat< on the stub of the spindle, re-inserting the Disc with a small amount of oil, enabling the disc to rotate for extended periods, but in any case, should be removed for decontamination at every wash up, plus a thin Nylon washer under the stub of the disc, against the main frame, also helps, makes no difference to the rollers traversing the Disc
2 more tiny Tips which may help, under the impression handle there is, a threaded bolt and locking nut, for the positive stop when full impression is achieved, after the correct adjustment of the 4 impression screws, PLUS a tiny Rubber washer stuck to the back of the Platen Proper just under the Middle Tympan securing clip, to act as a >bump stop<, factored in to All the bigger Machines… When You achieve several hundred I.P.H. impressions per hour, You WILL appreciate and understand.?

As can be seen from Your original shot,s the Tympan and Packing are far wider than apparently required, the reason being that with a little acquired skill, in comparatively short learning curve, printing stock much bigger than 3” x 2” was/is quite usual, via positioning, pass one, to the left, pass two to the right, stock rotated 180 degrees, pass three to the left, pass four to the right, can almost match much bigger M/c.

Wow! This has been so enlightening and really helpful. I will certainly look at some of the suggestions for the ink plate re oiling etc and washer.

I had also wondered why the packing was so wide and will try and get my head around this suggestion of rotation. Seems complicated but probably something I will grasp whilst doing it rather than reading.

I have to say other than the sticking ink disc it prints rather well and I set it up yesterday for a small run of cards I have designed and I was really pleased with the results.

From some considerable time back, The H.S.3 (1/2” bigger than The 8” x 5” in each direction) was

A. Very Strong by virtue of heavy One Piece casting for the Main Frame and

B. factored in, at the Design stage, was an extension to the Top bale arm, to carry and support (then) the A 4 size stock for the same reason, as on the extended Tympan packing, on the H.S.1 or 3 x 2. Worked well for the 180 degrees stock rotation, >and still does<.!! . .
Work & Twist, was a term, (THEN) in the future, not normally applied to the H.S.3.??
