Serif font lowercase L same as uppercase I

Was reading Teddy Roosevelt’s letters to his sister published by Chas. Scribner’s Sons in 1924 and could not identify the typeface. It is a serif face but the lower case L looks like an uppercase I with the cap extending on both sides of the stem. Any ideas what the typeface is?
