Gripper not picking up running guides

I’m trying to figure out how to run my windmill on guides, but the gripper is picking up the paper inconsistently.

The paper either gets wedged in the gauge or flings out the side of the press. I’m using a brass guide and boxcar swing away gauge, but it happens when I have both brass gauges on as well. I’m printing on 110 lb cotton paper. Is this a gripper timing issue or is something else causing it?

May be stating the obvious but have you set the left hand feeder standard over to the left hand stop?

frank is right. but there are actually three changes that need to be made to run with guides:

here’s a link to a manual if you don’t have one:

read on page 29. frank describes #1 and hopefully you did #2 but #3 maybe the one that you missed. without engagement the guides won’t raise to meet the sheet.

Yes, I’ve done all three. Here’s a video of it happening

I have had that happen, could be a few things. 1. Check the lube on the bottom lay arm, clean all the moving parts and lube well, could be sheet not being moved into side lay and gripper not getting enough of the sheet. 2. Check packing is absolutely flat and tight especially down at delivery side. Try bringing in the feed side lay a little. 3. Lastly check your grippers are holding the sheet well, could be the rubber strips are worn and are not holding the sheet.
Hope one of these helps.

tough to tell in the YT short vid because i cannot slow it down. but it looks like the gripper doesn’t pick up the sheet after impression. if so, it’s not a problem with the guides. it could be a gripper or the position of the side lay.

It looks like it is a guide issue, the sheet slipping behind the guide. Try using both brass gauges and maybe reposition the guide pin. Otherwise, make the side guide wider (move it to the right).

It has not been mentioned but on my Heidelberg, the rubber strips on the gripper edges may play a part in the sheet misfeeding. See page 110 in the manual mentioned above for how to apply them. They were long gone on my press when I got it and when I read about them, I gave them a try and found it helped tremendously. I couldn’t find the rubber Heidelberg recommended so I used a good quality electrical tape and after some experimenting, got it to work. And most of my misfeeding troubles ended.

Duplication

CHUCKLES Windmill mis feeding, did you over come the problem? and how did you resolve the issue?

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your tips. I haven’t had a chance to run it again as I’m in the process of moving, but I did check a few things. I don’t have any rubber left on the grippers so I’ll try to track some down. And I think it was missing an oil spot for the side lay (all the yellow/red paint has worn off on that side of the press) so that might be helpful too. I’ll let you know how it goes.
