Vandercook No4. ratchet pawl on the tympan bar
Hello,
I just wanted to study more the packing of my machine a Vandercook No4, and I encountered this problem with the the system which holds the tympan sheet.
When I compare my system to the photos on the net, I wonder if the ratchet pawl on the tympan bar is not mounted wrong way up.
It does not make sens this way, even if I get it fastened some way…
The screw is gripped, but is it the screw or the bolt behind which needs to be loosened to change the pawls direction?
Thanks,
Hubertus from France

I’m guessing that the pawl should hang down and when the tympan has been wrapped around the bar the pawl is tucked under the rachet.
.
When the pawl locks on top of the ratched, the teeth run from the top left to the bottom right, and the drawsheet winds clockwise (underhand around the reel rod). When the pawl locks underneath, the teeth run from the top right to the bottom left, and the drawsheet winds counterclockwise (overhand around the reel rod), and a clamp bar or adhesive tape is required to secure the drawsheet tail. File an uneven pawl edge.

Thank you Paul, great drawing. So it is ok to keep it like this and just fix the sheet with tape… I did not look on the teeth first hand but I see that they are correctly aligned with the ratchet pawl.
I would fear to break the screw anyway…
