Cleaning lettertype cabinet trays
I have a 1946 Hamilton type cabinet workstation. The printer’s drawers have bottoms of wood pressboard with black dust and watermarks. Letters and symbols for sorting have been written in graphite pencil in each of the sections. How may I best clean the dirt and minimize water stains?
First, it’s always good to use the correct terminology! The ‘workstation’ is probably a case-rack with composing frame. The type ‘drawers’ are cases. The ‘sections’ are compartments.
The dust can be removed using a vacuum-cleaner with brush nozzle, then a lightly dampened rag if necessary.
And why worry about removing the pencil-marks from the compartments? Once the case is filled with type, you’ll hardly notice them!
