The Master of Fine Arts in the Book Arts Program is in its thirteenth year. The program is located in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, School of Library and Information Studies, at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We accept up to eight new students per year for the 60-credit hour program which emphasizes the craft and art of making books by hand. We treat the book as a whole—from the first editorial inspiration, choice of typeface, book design, choice of art work to accompany the text, paper, bookbinding structure and decorative binding possibilities—with decisions based upon a careful reading of the text. Our students are highly motivated, and come from various undergraduate backgrounds and work experiences. We have four graduate assistantships available yearly, on a competitive basis.
