Old Cowtown Museum

Old Cowtown Museum is a living history museum that preserves and presents the history of Wichita, and Sedgwick County, Kanas, 1865-1880. The museum contains a restoration of the home of Marshall M. Murdock, printer of “The Wichita City Eagle” which began in 1872, and continues today. This republican newspaper was a vehicle that promoted the town, recruited the railroad and other businesses. Murdock was known nationwide for his promotion of Wichita as well as his extravagant writing style. Murdock, the paper and his style represent the typical western-editor-politician town promoter newspaper. In addition there is a replica of “The Wichita City Eagle” print shop that Murdock occupied for the first 3 years of life in Wichita. In the exhibit there is a Wasington press, a Chicago cylinder press and several job presses. This exhibit is staffed daily and provides demonstrations of type setting and printing on the job press for the general public. The exhibit also houses a reading room and an office the resembles that of many the newspaper offices of the time. Contact - Historic Wichtita-Sedgwick County, Inc.
