An excellent reference, this book not only includes type specimens but also identifies the designer, foundry, and the date each face was issued. The book was compiled by Mac McGrew, printer, designer, foremost authority in the field of American metal typefaces. The specimen book covers every known typeface designed and cast in metal in America during this century.

The book has 385 pages, 1600 black and white illustrations, 9 by 12 inches. Available in hardback and paperback through Oak Knoll Books.

in part, it reports:

“At age 14, M.F. “Mac” McGrew bought a Kelsey Excelsior printing press, designed as a “parlour press” for hobbyists.

It was the beginning of Mr. McGrew’s lifelong love of printing and typesetting, a romance that culminated six decades later in his publication of a reference book on American metal typefaces that has become the bible on the subject.”

Of course, that’s how it began for many of us old-timers…
