Rare Book School, University of Virginia

Rare Book School (RBS) is an independent, non-profit institute supporting the study of the history of books and printing and related subjects. Founded in 1983, it moved to its present home at the University of Virginia in 1992.

Each year, the institute attracts about 300 students, who come for one or more five-day, non-credit courses taught by an international roster of specialists in the history of the manuscript book, typography, book illustration, bookbinding, descriptive bibliography, and rare book librarianship.

RBS houses a collection of printing presses, including a full-scale reproduction of a wooden common press, and 15,000 books, dating from the 15th century to the present.
