Need some help in restoration

I just recently got this sigwalt chicago letterpress #10, I would like to restore it for use,I know its missing the chase and rollers but I thought this press would be a good start. What type of black paint should be used? Can I sand this down without damaging the surface?.I have been running several ab dick’s and for the past couple of months I have been having this strong interest in letterpress, the quality is just remarkable, any help here is greatly appreciated.

i have a similar press that is missing a chase also. i made one out of wood and it works quite well. as far as restoring these old presses goes i just wipe the dust off and use steel wool on the disk and the bed. they will last almost forever, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

You’re right, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, it works perfectly fine I’m just having a hard time locating the chase, the rollers and roller trucks where easy to find, and as far as restoring it I think I will just clean it up a bit, Thanks dickg……

i believe this is a business card press the one i have is 2x3 i think i took an old die cutting die and used the plywood to make my chase, measure the bed of the press the chase should fit snug. leave at least 1/2” of wood all around you should be able to find midget quoins to lock up your chase. if you use regular ones there won’t be much room for type, good luck

Thanks dickg, It looks like I’m going to have to make a chase for this press, i have been looking for the chase for a couple of weeks with no luck, now I move on to the rollers, roller trucks and core, I have been trying to find out the measurements for the rollers but again with no luck…the journey keeps on….Thanks dickg..
