Would people come

Have been thinking about this for a long time. I thinking about purchasing some letterpress equipment and starting classes.

As an old letterpress man, I could teach people how to set type, set up the type form or engraving for press work etc. And, the students could print a short run job for them self.

What would be a fair price for two day class?

I am in the Houston, TX area.

Are am I crazy to think about this.

Check out the yellow pages on this site, there are allot of people doing this and also renting equipment. If you check out their sites you will find pricing for the various things that are offered!

I think one easy way to price classes is to look at the San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) website:

http://sfcb.org/workshops

Some examples:

- Letterpress basic (6 sessions of 3.5 hrs each) is priced at $340.
- A two-day class using a Tabletop press is $140.

I believe the majority of newbies will be interested in printing using photopolymer plates (PP) on a boxcar-base (and not so much in setting type, set up the type form, etc). But this is just my personal opinion :)

Get in touch with the Museum of Printing History at 1324 W Clay St. in Houston. They already offer many classes there. Check out their site at www.printingmuseum.org and see what they offer. I haven’t ever been there, but this is supposed to be quite a place.

I know all about the Museum of Printing History in Houston. As back in the early 70’s worked a block away in a typesetting job and the building was a printing business.

I did join the Museum of Printing History and wrote them months ago about helping teaching people about letterpress. Never heard back from anyone.

The friend that I know that is deeply involved at the museum there is Gordon Rouze. See if you can look him up in the phone book and tell him your story. I’m sure he can connect you with someone there to get the ball rolling.

If you can’t find him, send me an e-mail and I’ll give you his personal phone number and e-mail address.

Thanks Rick. I have met Gordon back in Oct and talked a little to him by email.
