How to sell Old Plates, Zinc and Mag some mounted on wood

Where to sell - Zinc and Mag Plates of old american art and some photographs - created in 60s or 70s from original art -
I am a former photoengraver, retired, and in the 70s I collected plates from various sources, auctions and closing of plants etc. I have over 290 such plates from 5 x 7 in to 18 x 24 in.
Some of Circus and High Wire Acts, some of Picturesque America Series, and a few from original photographs, Deer, and more. Cn anyone suggest a market. I intended to mount them all on wood and sell them but never finished and am 70 now not too active.

Ebay is the best way. At time here is Houston we have art shows, for artist to sell their work.

Good luck on selling off your collection.

If you can get photos of them, or sell them a little cheaper, you could post them on here… I don’t know about other people, but I know I would be interested!

Hi lelledge,

If they were my plates, I’d want printers to get first crack at them, so I’d list them first on Briar Press and then on eBay. Since you have so many plates, instead of posting the photos here on Briar Press, you might want to put them on a photo-sharing site like Flickr and post a link here. This will allow you to post some high-resolution closeups, which most printers will want to see. You wouldn’t have to include closeups of all the plates, just a representative sample so that printers could see the quality and condition, especially since some of them are magnesium. This also would allow you to sell multiple plates to a single buyer without the buyer having to deal with multiple auctions. You could set a fair price, and perhaps offer a discount for multiple purchases. To help determine a price, you could search eBay for completed auctions for similar items.

What you don’t sell to printers here you can put up on eBay, which reaches a much wider range of buyers, including people who just collect plates and don’t print from them. Some collectors focus on specific subjects, so you might get top dollar from a buyer who collects, say circus plates. You could test the market by listing some plates here and on eBay.

Good luck!

Barbara

I might want the Picturesque America Series for printing latter.

Do you have prices for these items?

What sizes?

I’d be really interested in the circus ones & the deer one(s). But I agree with Barbara… if you want them to be used, sell them here, if you just want the most money you can get, sell them on ebay- just know that the buyer(s) will probably just put them on a shelf.

Just a gentle warning - don’t forget the wee matter of copyright… while someone may own the metal and wood, they may not own the use of the image…

Cicut5 you are so right. I work at a weekly newspaper and this problems comes up all the time.
