George J. Mills

Platen Press Operation

Platen Press Operation by George Mills, is a highly desirable book for the letterpress printer and library. In the author’s words, “This book has been written with two aims in mind: to direct the beginning student in his learning about platen presswork; and to assist the advanced student or journeyman press operator to improve the efficiency of his techniques and the quality of the jobs which he prints.”

The well-illustrated book covers everything from the preparation for printing, to the parts and care of the press. It includes chapters on selecting ink and paper, as well as information on specific job presses such as the Chandler & Price and Heidelberg press.

The chapters are based on lectures given by Mills in the School of Printing, at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
