18pt borders & ornaments - yay!

Hi again all. While casting some 18pt Bembo (for which we’re still taking orders, though not for much longer), I thought I’d take advantage of having the right sized mould set up to cast from some of the ornament matrices we have (and there’s a larger photo on http://adventuresinmonotype.tumblr.com).

If you’re interested, a 24em line (as in the photo) will be £10 plus postage; for the corner & side pairs, we’ll do a fount of one line of the corners, and four lines of the sides for £45.

Happy weekend!

Just for anyone interested. The Glint ornament pair (4th set from the right side as well as the 7th line from the left)) are the crown jewels in this offering. They are extremely good looking and versatile and can procuduce an amazing number of combinations. You simply cannot go wrong by having these in your shop.

Ah, so 1351 is *also* part of the Glint set?

I can only find references to David Bethel designing B1309 and B1310 as ‘Glint’…

See the article by David Bethel, “Creating Printer’s Flowers.” This appeared in _Matrix_ No. 13 (1993). It was also reprinted in the book _Type and Typography: Highlights from Matrix_. (West New York, New Jersey: Mark Batty Publisher LLC, 2003). He does make reference to his having designed 1351, but as cornerpieces to supplement the Coronet border unit (itself designed by John Dreyfus, he says), not as part of his earlier Glint.

My bad. I thought it might have been part of the Glint border because it was designed by Bethel and has the same feel.

The Bethel article really gives a sense that he was just going along having fun making ornaments and that Monotype had more to do with the grouping of them into named releases. So your sense that they have the same feel reflects their origins precisely.

A flickr user (not me) has posted two images from a Monotype publication showing these:

These same two images are reproduced in the Bethel article, as pages from The Monotype Recorder (vol/no unspecified), but I’m not sure if they really are that or if they were an insert or separate leaflet. If anyone has an exact citation for where these appeared, that would be useful to know. (It would also be useful to know the number of The Monotype Newsletter (not Recorder) in which Glint was featured.)
