Challenge Cutter - Missing Part

I have manual 26 1/2 Challenge Guillotine cutter that I just picked up. When I try to clamp the paper the top handle does not stop and get tight it continues to spin. Hopefully the cutter is not scrap because it’s missing a part.

The clamp screw may have a threaded collar held by a holder and a key. It might be that collar, holder or key are damaged or missing.

Depending on its vintage, the service documents may still be available on the Challenge website.

Here are a few photos I took. It does have a collar that is missing a Key. Not sure that is the issue.

Does the shaft spin along with the wheel?

If not, the wheel’s pin may be sheared (the handle might also lift off the top).

The wheel and the shaft are still connected. They spin together

Well then, regarding the picture of the collar that may be missing a key… when clamp closes on a stack (or the bed) and the wheel spins, do the shaft and wheel rise up? That collar may be what keeps the shaft in place, forcing the clamp down.

Where can I purchase keys from. What type of store?

I might examine to see if the holder is still intact.

I’m not by my cutter at the moment, but the diagram for the 193 shows that the holder ( #11) may fit in a recess in the collar. I doubt the collar or key will be very helpful without the holder.

So if that is the case, I have a paper weight Or is this part available somewhere?
Also, what model/manual is this that you are showing? Can you email this to me? I messaged you my email address.

The image is from the manual for the model#s 193 and 230.

The manual for your specific model might be found here:

I rekon the bits you need can be fabricated, if they are not common hardware.

Here is a few more images. Also how would I know the size to make the piece.

Good morning
couple comments and/or questions

When the hold down reaches bottom and you rotate the handwheel, does the handwheel and shaft raise up?

It appears from the last picture that the collar and clip are missing. The clip goes into the groove on the shaft and the collar slides down over the clip to keep it from falling out. The clip takes all the thrust of the shaft and prevents it from raising up when the hold down is pressed against the paper.

New parts should not be hard to fabricate for the right shop. Screw will have to be backed all the way out of cutter to allow the new collar to be installed.

This is my armchair quarterback long distance troubleshooting theory.

Looking forward to hearing what you find out out.

Marshall

PS
edited my terminology.

Based on the diagram and photo, I imagine the clip must be spread to get around the narrow section of the screw, the key put in the keyway and then the collar placed down over both.

To do that, I rekon the handwheel will need to be removed from the screw so the screw can be lowered enough to allow room for the collar above the clip. After the clip/key/collar are assembled on the screw, the handwheel can be replaced.

If I didn’t have access to proper tools, I’d take the screw & handwheel to a machine shop and have them take off the handwheel and make the clip.

Thank you both for your help! It’s very much appreciated. I guess the next step will be to find a machine shop to help me fit it. Hopefully it wont cost an arm and a leg to get fixed.

There may be folks and clubs in your area that deal with antiquities, old machines, steam engines, tractors and such. Those folks should know who to contact for services. There might even be printers, you never know…
