Heidelberg 10 x15 Left Lay Standard

Hello -

I am seeking some advice. I am using brass gauges and when I move my left lay standard all the way against the stop for brass gauges my paper hits the gauges and then crashes into the side guide. If I move my left lay standard slightly to the right maybe an 1/16-1/8” this corrects the paper crashing problem, but my standard is no longer in the correct position. Since I moved the left lay standard won’t the grippers now drop the paper into the gauges from a higher location thus causing bounce and possible registration inaccuracies? What could be causing this problem? Thank you for your advice!

I would ensure:
Stock is square (90 degree gripper/guide edges)
No debris in the track for the standard
No debris under the standard
Front feed standard is aligned to gripper
Left feed standard is square to front standard
Right guide is in mid-position
Gripper release cam is secure

If problem persists:

I’d stop the press after pickup and advance by hand (power off) to observe where the stock is in the gripper and watch closely at the point of drop.

Chime back with details… :-)

These things I know for sure:

- stock is square
- no debris in the track for the standard
- no debris under the standard
- right guide is in mid position
- front feed standard is square, reading 0 on the indicator

I will inspect the rest tomorrow. Is there a chance I have the wrong standard for the press? Thank you for your prompt response!

Today I checked the remaining items and the left feed standard is square to front standard and gripper release cam is secure and in the correct position.

When I observe the press under hand power this what I see:

The left lay standard is all the way against the stop (correct position for brass gauges) my paper hits the fly wheel gauge first, then the pump side gauge, and then crashes into the side guide.

Is it possible that I have the wrong standard for my press? What could be the problem? It seems like this may make tight registration a bit more difficult.

If I move my left lay standard slightly to the right maybe an 1/16-1/8” this corrects the paper crashing problem.

More likely the stop is not in the correct place.

If only 1/8” shift compensates for the issue, I don’t think there will be a problem when stock drops into the gauges.

Re the stock hitting the left gauge first:

Another item I would check is gripper pickup… I’d stop the press right after pickup and trace a pencil line along the gripper on the stock. Trace for both grippers and compare for parallel line with edge of stock and for similarity between grippers.

PS

I forgot to ask, when the paper hits the first gauge, is the gripper open and dropping the stock, or is the gripper still holding the stock. And, are the gauges already up, or still rising toward the platen?

Can you elaborate on the correct stop positioning? Loosen and pull the stop all the way to left for brass and all the way to the right for nickel, right?

I will test the grippers this afternoon and report back.
Thanks again!

One gripper grabs the paper at 20 pts and the second gripper at 17/18 pts. Both are fairly parallel, but the gripper that grabs at 17/18 pts might be ever so slightly askew.

I will answer your postscript question tomorrow, I forgot to look at that this afternoon.

Thank you for your help.

It sounds like most everything is in order, but it seems slightly odd for the stock to hit the left gauge first.

And yes, the standard’s stop should be tightened to the left. That usually aligns the stock close to the left edge of the front standard.
