Where to start

Hi,
After many years of admiring anything letterpress I finally got myself a Kelsey 5x8! It should arrive next week, is in a very good condition except for rollers, trucks and grippers which I ordered from NA graphics.
Since this has all added up to quite a bit more than I had originally planned I am now trying to find an inexpensive way to get going (furniture, plates, type…just the basics, nothing fancy, so I can start learning ).
Does anybody have any tips as to what the best way is to go about this? Where I could find something inexpensive?
Oh and if this makes a difference, I am in CT.
Thanks so much!

I must say, EBAY has a lot to offer - there are some really nice people selling Letterpress equipment & accessories. I’m learning too! Right now I’m printing on white kid’s construction paper & manila paper to practice - it’s thick, uncoated & cheap! Also, there’s a seller on EBAY that I got a copy of a Kelsey owner’s manual from - he sells digital reprints - I have learned so much from that little book!!

Or just download the Kelsey guide from here and print it yourself :)

oprion - yes that’s exactly what i did last weekend ;)
it’s not so much the operating the press that i’m worried about (i know i will only learn by doing - and making mistakes) but the very basic supplies to even get going.
ivanandlucy - i was trying to stay away from ebay. people bidding there don’t seem to be on the same budget as me ;)

Joand,

Hi, and welcome to the letterpress world!

I think I can help you with the items you need. Please email, and I will reply in detail.
Thanks.

Hi , I’m a newbie also to letterpress printing. I need equipments to get started. Please contact me at [email protected]

I always like to check things out in person—and the best place to do that in New England is at Letterpress Things in Chicopee, MA. John has a list of open dates posted on his website (www.letterpressthings.com) and has an entire area of the store dedicated to getting started on a tabletop press.

Cheers!
Kelly

Thanks Kelly!
He is on my list, maybe i’ll manage to visit next weekend:)

Cheers,
Jo
