Painting My Press

I recently purchased a Craftsman Table top press. It has not been used in the last 10 years. Overall, it functions fine and the movements are fluid. But there are areas that have minor rust spots. The rust is surface only, and not in any of the joints of the movable parts.

Can I paint my press with a rust proof paint, careful not to get into the movable joints? Is it better to use a spray paint or brush on paint (I would think brush on cause I can keep it out of the movable joints?)

Thanks in advance, Susan

Sure — almost all presses, when new, were painted. Just make sure the surface is perfectly clean; otherwise the paint won’t stick. I would think that either a brush or spray would be OK. Working the press would break any paint film in the joints. Be careful not to clog up the oil holes, though.

Oil holes? I just looked and found them. Wow, I have learned a few new things today! I read the other posts about oil holes… and I should also oils my press after painting it.

Thanks, Kevin!

Oil the press before every use. The oil sort of runs through the press, so it needs to be replenished regularly.
