letterpress love in richmond, va.

hello all,

so, i’m pretty determined to learn the art of letterpress printing. currently, i’m an art director/designer, and would love either a private printer or workshop scenario to really dive in and get rolling, but it seems letterpress resources are a bit scarce in richmond. aside from the bowe haus at VCU (which i plan on contacting next week) i would welcome other venues as well. something local as i plan on really devoting some time to learning and practicing. i’ve taken a workshop at the railway station press in alexandria (which was a great first introduction) but it’s a bit of a drive for regular instruction.

any suggestions?

In Richmond we’re fortunate to have GRIPHOG (Greater Richmond Itinerant Printers Historical and Occasional Gathering), which will be meeting in early March at VCU’s letterpress lab. I’d also be glad to share information with you and help if I can, though my shop is a ways from Richmond, about 25 miles North. Get in touch and let’s see what we can work out.

thanks very much for your reply. i’d be very interested in getting involved with the VCU letterpress lab, as that’s right down the street. would also be interested to check out the GRIPHOG meeting if i am in town. (slight possibility of being out of town early march, depending on the date.)

regardless, i’d like to be able to contact you and get something going. 25 miles north ain’t nuthin’…that seems pretty workable. i’ve also been trying to keep an eye out for a small platen tabletop (C&P Pilot would be divine) but these seem hard to come by. maybe you can point me in the right direction.

I work for a local print shop here in Richmond printing letterpress, I would be happy to talk with you and share information. I am not an expert but have been doing this for over 6 years now.
