Kelsey with stripped chase screws

Hi, I have recently got a Kelsey 6 x 10. I have cleaned the rust off the chase, but the screws are stripped. Any suggestions on how to get them out? I was hoping I could get these old screws out and replace them with new ones. But if not, I know I can use quoins instead. It’s just I heard it is better to use the screws, because you run the risk of breaking the chase when using quoins. Thanks for any suggestions.

i don’t like the screws, if you don’t tighten the quoins with all your might you should not break the chase, the quoins hold better than the screws, on a kelsey you can use the wickersham quoins, the high speed are more for the automatic presses, they are much more expensive. good luck dick g.

I assume the slots of the set screws are stripped, not the screws themselves. The easiest way to remove them is to drill a hole in the center of the screw, pound in a small easy-out and then back out the easy-out with a wrench or pair of pliers. Easy-outs can be found at any good hardware store, you need one small enough to pound in the hole you drill which should be about 1/2 to 2/3 the diameter of the set screw.

If you mean that the threads that the set screw goes into are stripped, you can drill out the hole a bit and using a tap the next size up from the set screw, tap new threads in the chase. A new set screw the same size as the tap will then work. Nothing should be more than a couple of dollars.

Thank you both. I will look into both:)
