Internship in Sydney

The Distillery is a letterpress and design studio based in North Sydney. Our mission is to help spread the love of letterpress in Australia!

We’re currently seeking a talented junior designer to join our team as an intern. The position requires 2-3 days a week and is a paid gig.

ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Established in early 2011, The Distillery is a full service letterpress studio specialising in commercial design and letterpress printing. We work with creative professionals, design studios, wedding planners and brides-to-be to produce custom designed letterpress products.

While we’re not officially launching until July, we’ve already experienced significant interest and growth. Our press is running daily with client projects, and we have lots of exciting plans and creative projects ahead.

Things we love include:
- hand-drawn typography
- tasty design
- mixing ink
- good old fashioned values

We think there’s something real special about holding a luxuriously thick textured cotton sheet, which has printed type softly impressed into it.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
The internship encompasses a full range of our studio activities. We believe that the role is very rewarding and offers unique experiences that possibly have not been available to the Sydney design industry for many years.

Applicants are required to have completed or close to completing a tertiary design course, and willing to get their hands dirty. Your fingers will get very inky, and our studio smells of oil, kerosene and polymer.

As well as letterpress design opportunities, the internship program will encompass the following activities:
- pre-press review and file processing
- polymer plate production
- project quotations and planning
- client service and management
- marketing and administration
- learning to use a letterpress machine

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS
Letterpress is a very detailed and particular craft. It requires extraordinarily high levels of attention to detail, lateral problem solving skills, maturity and loads of patience.

We require someone who can follow instructions accurately, and has high levels of communication skills. As well as 2-3 day a week availability until mid December 2011, you are required to have a driver’s license, and be highly proficient with Adobe CS5.

It would also be awesome if you have advanced skills with typography and composition, and/or illustration and artwork. Finally, your creative interest as a designer would be compatible with the direction of our studio, shown through your folio pieces and/or personal projects.

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS
This is a unique opportunity as you would be on the leading edge of the letterpress revival movement, and utilise your skills to make a real creative statement. Some other benefits of our internship include:
- unique hands-on letterpress learning experiences
- networking with a friendly team of like-minded creatives
- access to our letterpress for your own personal projects
- payment for client project time
