Gauge Pins
I want to buy some Megill gauge pins and, as there is a variety of them, I would like to know what is the difference between Spring Slide Gauge Pins, (https://0345f25.netsolstores.com/springslidegaugepins.aspx) Spring Tongue Gauge Pins (https://0345f25.netsolstores.com/megillspringtonguegaugepin.aspx) and Double Grip Gauge Pins (https://0345f25.netsolstores.com/megillcodoublegripgaugepins.aspx).
How are they used? Which of them are adjustable? Which kind is the best?
Is there a difference between the first two? That’s the standard kind, slip that sharp bit in the middle through the tympan and you’re done, but people often have to use glue or wax or tape to keep them in place because they can move/pivot pretty easily.
The double grip ones are great, one slit in the tympan and you turn the metal wheels to tighten it down. Problem is that they’re pretty big and bulky, and when you loosen the wheels, they can move all over.
What you don’t mention is the other option they sell:

Which is the kind most people will recommend. They can be a bit of a pain until you get used to them and you have to cut 2 slits in the tympan, but when you lock them down, they’re not going anywhere. You can unlock them and move them a bit forward and backwards, but not too far. Any further and you have to cut new slits, which is another pain.
In any case, those are the ones you want, and they come with instructions.

I loosen them just enough to move while maintaining a tension or barely un-snug, if you will, then you can simply move them only a pinch.
The double grips are my favorite, but nothing wrong with learning to use all of them.
