copy press

Browsing through the museum photos here today I realized that I have a miniature copy press in my shop (at least that’s what it looks like). I hadn’t any idea what it was until this morning and I still have no idea how to use it or what it does. Can anyone give me a clue? Thanks

If you can find it, take a look at:

Rhodes, Barbara and William Wells Streeter. _Before Photocopying: The Art and history of Mechanical Copying, 1780-1938_. New Castle, DE and Northampton, MA: Oak Knoll Press and Heraldry Bindery, 1999.

It’s a lovely book which is devoted primarily to the letter copying press. While it’s now prohibitively expensive, it can be found via interlibrary loan. (Note: The subtitle of this book describes it as “A Book in Two Parts.” It is one physical volume.)
