A new J J Lankes book

Julius John Lankes (1884-1960) was a wood cut artist, whose woodcuts accompanied several famous authors’ published work, including that of Robert Frost, Sherwood Anderson, and Beatrix Potter. His Hoe Washington hand on which he proofed most of the approximately 1300 blocks he cut, is now on loan to the University of Tampa Book Arts Studio.

Several years ago the Lankes scholar Welford Taylor, professor emeritus of the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, discovered the manuscript of an allegorical children’s story titled The Rich Mouse which Lankes had written, accompanied by two woodcuts Lankes cut for it. Neither the story nor the woodcuts have been published. The University of Tampa Book Arts Studio proposes to publish the story for the first time, and created a Kickstarter project to crowdfund the publication as a fine press book, printed by hand on the Lankes Hoe Washington press from hand-set Goudy Village type, on high-quality paper, and hand bound in decorated paper over boards.
