Potential Wayzgoose in Davenport, Iowa

I serve on the Board of Directors for a non-profit organization in Davenport, Iowa USA associated with the Book Arts. We are researching the possibility of hosting a CATFISH Book Arts Wayzgoose in May or June of 2018.

This event would be organized like traditional Wayzgoose events where practitioners of traditional book related crafts including calligraphers, letterpress printers, printmakers (linocut, wood engravers, etc), paper makers, eco paper dying folks, paper marblers, makers of artists’ books and hand bookbinders gather to present their work to the public, renew connections with colleagues and share their expertise with the next generation of artists and artisans.

We anticipate a jury process for potential exhibitors who would present and sell their work to the public. In addition, we would hope that many of our exhibitors would demonstrate their particular fine craft for visitors. There would be a modest table fee for exhibitors who would be able to sell their work and keep 100% of the proceeds.

I would like to ask anyone here to help me understand if there are enough people who would apply to be an exhibitor to make the event viable. Please comment here, or send me a message through Briar Press. I will keep you posted. Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

I’m in Iowa near Cedar Falls, and I would consider attending and applying for a table. I do letterpress and book arts.
I’m also considering attending the June 21-24 APA Wayzgoose in CO, so that is a date and therabouts that may be busy for me.
I met some CATFISH representatives when I had a table at the Iowa City Book Fair this past October. Absolutely beautiful work at your table.
I look forward to hearing how this develops.
Julie

Hi Julie
Good to hear from you! We should be making a decision by the end of this month.
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

As an Iowa book artist and printer, I would be interested in exhibiting — or at the very least, attending! :)

Annie

Hi Annie,
Thank you! We are working on this idea now and hope to have more information by the end of the month. If you know anyone else who might be interested, please let me know. Thank you.
Nancy

Nancy:

I would be interested in getting the information about the ev not as I live in Mason City and would be interested in having a table to display and sell books from Cedar Creek Press

John Henry

Hi John,
Thank you! As mentioned above, we are gathering information now. Do you think May is a good time for such an event in Iowa?
Nancy

Yes, I think the snow will be gone by then.

Seriously, as Julie mentioned, with the APA Wayzgoose in June, May should be free and clear. It will be good to meet and greet others who have interests in paper, ink and books.

Over the last 40 years, one of my favorite book stores has been The Source Bookstore on 3rd street. I hope they are still active in the trade.

Nancy,

The Amalgamated Printers’Association’s Annual Wayzgoose is slated for Denver, CO, June 21-24. This will probably be the “event of the year” for letterpress people. Along with the ‘normal’ Wayzgoose activities, this year’s events will also include a massive auction of the late Jim Grisenti’s printing collection. A major amount of antique type will be auctioned off. None of Jim’s collection has been cherry-picked or sold, it is all intact, and the only th ings that will bemissing will be some materials going to the local Englewood Depot Letterpress Museum in Jim’s memory.

As soon as those items have been selected and removed by the museum. An extensive Excel spreadsheet will be available beforehand to let everyone know exactly what will be offered at the auction. This should be the letterpress event-of-the-year, so try to stay as far away from those dates as possible. A May date for your event sounds good to me.

I am in central Iowa so I could consider coming to Davenport for it, but I will be heavily involved in the Wayzgoose and auction in Denver in June.

Hi Everyone
Thank you for getting back to me. I have heard from over 20 Book Artists who are also interested in participating in May, so we are working on details.

Rick thanks for the update on the June Wayzgoose! If we go ahead in May, perhaps we can publicize this event at our event?

I will keep everyone posted. Please ask others you know in the area to get in touch through Briar Press if possible.
Nancy

Hi Everyone
We have been trying to work on the Wayzgoose possibility, but date conflicts are moving this potential event to late October-Early November.

I will keep you posted. We hope to have a decision made by the end of February.
Nancy

First week of Nov. is normally Hamilton Two Rivers, Wis Wayzgoose.

The American Typecasting Fellowship has announced its conference for 2018 on August 24 - 26 to be held in San Francisco. It will be hosted by Mackenzie & Harris at their plant in the Presidio. This is usually a well attended event held every two years. This is the letterpress event for the “every two year group.” I attended my first one at Harold Berliner’s type foundry back in 1990 and have travelled around the country attending many of these since then.

And I will be attending the Denver APA Wayzgoose in June, so it will be a busy summer.

Thanks for the heads up Fritz!

Hi Everyone, We are now looking at Saturday, October 6, for the CATFISH BookArts Wayzgoose in Davenport, Iowa. My Board of Directors would like to get a good idea how many people in the midwest would be interested in having a display/sales table at this event. Could you please post a note here, if you have not already done so, or email me at [email protected] this week if you might be interested? Thank you! I am in the process of designing the website for this event and hope to have it up within the week. I think this is going to be a great event. We already have hand papermakers, paper marblers, letterpress printers and other book artisans who have expressed interest! The venue is open, on the main floor, and has plenty of free parking. Please let me know what you think! Thanks! If you would like more information about the sponsoring organization, The Art Legacy League, please see this recent news story: http://www.kwqc.com/content/misc/The-Art-Legacy-League-476549703.html

We have a space in the JB Young Opportunity Center for 40-50 exhibitors. We will also have a food vendor on site.

Hi Nancy,

Right now October 6 works for me. I will also probably be being some nice antique typefaces to sell.

Rick von Holdt, the Foolproof Press

Thanks Rick! I am hoping that I hear from enough people that we will be able to launch the thing in the next couple of weeks. Cheers!

Hi Nancy,

I can not find the website or any information on a Davenport Wayzgoose.

Please reply with the latest information.
