Recent grad needs “starter” press!

Hi everyone! I’m new here.

I am graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art with my MFA in Graphic Design in a little over a week. I took a Letterpress class with Bob Cicero, last owner of Globe Press, interned with Globe last summer, and also had the opportunity to be the teaching assistant for Mary Mashburn of Typecast Press and Allison Fisher (Globe Manager), so I spent a lot of time in the Globe Studio during my time here at MICA and I’ve really fallen more in love with letterpress!

I’m moving back home to Oklahoma (leaving Baltimore, MD on May 22), driving through Kentucky, Missouri, etc.

I’ll be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Oklahoma in August, but my husband and I are really hoping to start our own little print shop.

I’m hoping to maybe score a 5x8” or bigger Kelsey press.. potentially a C&B Pilot. I will have a 16’ truck with lots of room on the way back to Oklahoma.

Does anyone have any leads? I’d love to talk!

Thanks for reading,
McKenna Sanderson

I have a Pilot style 6x10 Craftsmen Superior press which has been revitalized and I am looking to sell. Send me a note and I’ll send photos and price info.

My first job out of school was as an Asst. Prof. At Oklahoma State. We enjoyed the climate and the friendly people.

You seem to have a good game plan, all the best in your endeavors! Are you planning on traditional type-metal, or using PP plates? You might look for “old-time thresher’s reunions” in the Midwest, which often have a letterpress component (including equipment and type for sale). There’s one in Mt. Pleasant IA in late August/early September, and the APA Wayzgoose always has an auction. People will give you lots of advice, and usually a good deal on prices since you’re teaching. We need more young’uns involved in traditional crafts!

The price of a press is inversely proportional to its weight. If space isn’t an issue, you will probably be able to find a bigger floor standing press for less money than a tabletop press.

A floor model platen is more useful in the long run. Try to imagine running 500 of anything on a tabletop lever pull press. Much easier on a treadle, or motorized press. Of course if you have zero space starting out, a table top could fit in more easily.

Thanks for all your comments and advice, everyone! I’ve reached out to a couple people. Thinking about really considering just biting the bullet and getting a floor standing press..should have the space.
