LASERING MATERIAL FOR TYPE
I have a Trotec 80 watt laser engraver that I use to make rubber stamps at my work. Are there any materials available to laser that will work to make letterpress printing plates?

For wood, take a look at http://www.briarpress.org/57682, there are also a few other threads on making wood type.
Commonly, metal plates were etched in zinc, copper, or magnesium, and occasionally steel; all of which will make nasty fumes when vaporized by the laser.
