Considering Purchasing a Hohner 6.5 x 10 Tabletop Press
Hello,
Im new to letterpress and I’m looking at purchasing a Hohner 6.5 x 10 Tabletop Press but I have been told by a couple people that I should go with a different press (something more common) because it will be hard to find parts for this “odd duck.” THe press itself seems to be in good condition, just needing some restoration on the rollers. Could anyone else chime in on this with more knowledge than I have? People seem to have nothing but good things to say aout the press itself (so far) as far as qaulity and build, I’m just worried aout needing to replace things and the availabilty of parts. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. =)
I’m assuming this is the Hohner clone of the C&P Pilot Press. Some of the parts will be interchangeable but most will not. That being said, if the press is in good shape (no breaks, no welds) and you’re able to treat it well and within its limits, then you should have little or no need for replacement parts. Keep it oiled, don’t try for unreasonable deep impression, and exercise caution anytime you move it and it should last for your lifetime. Chases, rollers, cores, trucks, etc. are all swappable with standard C&P Pilot parts.
Hohners are high quality presses. I have one of that size, it’s a pilot clone, and imo better built. American Printing Supply used to import and sell them. Mine came from a high school.
I would not hesitate to get one. If in good shape you are unlikely to ever need anything besides getting rollers recovered.
I can’t imagine what parts you would need for it unless you have plans of dropping it down the stairs.
A tabletop platen press rarely needs parts. If this press is a good deal and suits your needs, go for it.
