I was given this Hopkinson and Cope press by Senate House Library, London University, when it was in danger of being scrapped. It probably dates from the 1930s, when the library opened. It’s a historic item - it was on the premises during the Second World War when George Orwell was working for the BBC in the building, and drafting “1984”.
I can no longer give it a home and would like to give it to someone who can, and preferably someone who would use it. Hence free to good home.
Needless to say, it’s heavy and has to be collected, or collection arranged. I have a neighbour with a forklift whose number I can provide to the buyer.
The dimensions given for the press are 64 inches high, 37 inches wide, and 21 inches deep. It’s bolted (4 bolts) to two sleepers which increase the overall height to 67 inches.
