Moving a SP25 Advice
A friend of mine is moving an SP25. It’s not going far (about an hour) but they’re having a rough time figuring out how to move it safely. Has anyone moved one recently and have some tips for them?

Ideally, hire a rigger and purchase moving insurance for safety and peace of mind. No to frighten you, but there are plenty of press move disaster stories. A hand-cranked SP25 weighs 1600 lbs., and a power carriage model weighs 1700 lbs—most lift gates are rated for 1500 lbs. The floor space is approximately 4 × 8’. Standard doorways are 3ft.
To prepare for transit:
- remove the hand crank (loosen the set screw and drive out the taper pin)
- remove the feed board (sockethead cap screws on the underside and note the spacer bars)
- remove the rubber form rollers, the rider, and the oscillator
strap the carriage to the bed—at the open end of the bed if the weight needs to be distributed for an incline or a threshold.
To mount the bed on skids or machine skates (heavy-duty dollies):
- lift at the feet using a Johnson bar and wood blocks to mount on skids or machine skates
- load onto a low trailer with a winch or come-along.
To load onto a box truck with a forklift:
- remove the sheet metal panel on the non-operator’s side so that the forks can pass all the way through—lift under the press bed—not under the sheet metal shelf.
-cushion the operator’s side against the back truck wall, strap the press to the wall, and brace the operator’s side to prevent it from getting tumpt over.
