Help with main eccentric removal (C&P 10x15 restoration)

Hello everyone, how are you?

I’m working on a restoration project and could use some advice. This is not my first time completely dismantling a C&P OS 10x15, but in this case I need to remove the main eccentric in order to repair the tracks of the main gear and give that area a proper cleaning.

I don’t have a pulley puller available, so this will need to be done with hammer and drift. The issue I’m facing is that I’m not sure about the correct direction to drive out the headed taper pin (key) that secures the eccentric to the shaft. Should it be driven inward, toward the frame of the press, or outward?

Has anyone here done this before and can share the right procedure? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Juan

I believe you are going to want to move the pin toward the press. This discussion from earlier this year may be helpful.

The pin should be a straight pin. Possibly a slight taper on the inboard end, strictly for alignment during insertion. If you have access to a torch, preferably acetylene, with a rosebud tip, it would be very helpful. Propane will help too, just not as effective. You want to heat around the OUTSIDE of the cam. Not, inside near the shaft. A Big hammer should knock it off. I use a block of brass, hanging from a threaded rod to absorb damaging impact. A second person holds this in place. Swinging Sledge from inside to out, from the delivery area of press. Turn the main shaft to remove evenly. The second person should be ready with welders gloves to catch the “head”. It is heavy and hot. Letting it crash to the floor is rather barbaric, so a very sturdy table right under it is good.
