My new portable hand press

I just finished converting one of those little welded-iron-and-plywood portable block presses for edition printing and demo-ing hand press use as well as portable press. The color is due to the prior intended use, which never occurred. The tympan and friisket frames are welded 1/8”x1” steel with the hinges welded on and the tympan is covered with Koverall. The chase and tympan-frisket openings are 5”x7”. I may try it out this weekend at a local “Book Fair” in Turrialba. Fun to see it happen!

Good Luck with that!

Do you intend to cover the tympan, to provide a surface to stick gauge pins into and hold your makeready in place?

Show us a print when you get it working.

The press is a WoodZilla 15x22cm block-printing press. The tympan is covered with SIG’s Koverall, a heat-shrink fine-weave polyester fabric. The frisket (the open rectangle above the white tympan) uses large rubber bands to hold the paper, and Henry guides to position it. The press weighs about 10 lbs.
