A bent roller hook

Hello, I recently got my first press, a Kelsey 5x8 in the mail. A few parts need assembled that were removed for shipping. One of the roller hooks I’m afraid bent during the ride and now wont move at all…being a complete beginner, I have no experience….do I need to replace it, is there a way to fix it?? Any thoughts would be appreciated
thanks
Katie

Bent Roller Hooks are not a terribly big deal on a Kelsey. Since they are made of mild steel, they can normally be bent back straight without much difficulty. The one thing you want to be careful of is to not break the casting. The idea is to bend the rod just back straight enough so that you can remove it, and then take it to a workbench where you can work on it properly.

The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to remove the spring, and slip a piece of 3/8 ” pipe over the tail end of the rod…. then gently use the increased leverage to bend the rod back to straight.

Remember, on a Kelsey, the rod does not have to be perfect. As long as it will move freely in it’s hole with the roller and spring in place, it’ll work fine. The rods on my 5x8 are slightly s-shaped, but it doesn’t seem to affect them.

I did it! thank you, they slide just fine now :)
