Magnetic base v. plastic-backed plates
Hi All - I apologize if this has already been covered, but I couldn’t seem to find a good discussion. I’m a beginner with a Kelsey 5x8 and am trying to decide on what type of base to go with. I was about to order a base from Boxcar but an now wondering if I should get a magnetic base. What are the big pros and cons of either base and what is best for a begginer/hobbiest printer?
Any info or help that you have would be greatly appreciated!
Boxcar has a page that lists the advantages of going plastic backed, from their perspective of course.
There have been issues with slippage and magnets dying with the cheaper mag bases like patmags. Seems to me a bunting base is the clear, best choice, but for a beginner is way to expensive. I would go boxcar.

Definitely go with a Boxcar or Elum base. Bunting bases are industrial grade and priced accordingly. You would be wasting a ton of money for absolutely no gain with a Kelsey.

Thank you both for the input! I’m planning on putting an order into Boxcar this week.
