Gripper bars Kelsey 5x8

Hi everyone, trying to put together my Kelsey 5x8 press as it is missing some gripper bars. In fact it seems that many I see for sale don’t have any. Looking at a parts diagram it seems I need the bars, the rod and a spring. Anyone know who may have some or may remanufacture some? Thanks!

NA Graphics has all these parts for sale.

Please see the following to properly identify Kelsey (and other) table top platen press parts.

Another place to try is Letterpress Things, he has parts for kelseys. Dick G.

If you’re handy you can make the grippers. I made mine out of 5/64 X 1/2 inch flat mild steel. I purchased the stock from McMasters Carr for around $10.00 for 6 feet. You can purchase the shaft stock at a local big box, you’ll have to cut it to length and drill a hole in it. I used 1/2 inch round stock for the gripper bushing and bend the gripper material around it, drilled and tapped the hole and purchase slotted set screws at the local hardware store. The spring is music wire, which can be purchased at a hobby shop or some hardware stores. I think you should be able to buy drill collars for the 1/4 inch gripper shaft to make the gripper bushings, right diameter and they already have the hole drilled and tapped. Not a big project and you don’t have to be a skilled metal worker. I like making missing parts - not to make it sound sappy but it makes me feel more attached to the press. If you wish I can make the parts for the cost of materials and shipping. I already have 5 extra feet of gripper material.

Chuck,
That would be great as I am not to handy, that is without messing stuff up. I recently looked for some bar stock and our local Lowes didn’t have any.

How much would this be?
Thanks much
Jon!

Hello Pilgrim,

About $15.00 including postage, I think that would be fair.

More than fair Chuck, I will email you through BP and discuss any payment details….thanks!
