Guillotine Cutter

Hello! I have a lovely old Advance guillotine cutter that has a problem! I was cutting today when the press mechanism (the part that holds the paper down tightly) gave out. I heard some cracking and saw a couple of pieces (threads) fall out. My husband was trying to take it apart so we could see what had broken, but we couldn’t take it apart. I guess we need a schematic to help us figure out how to take it apart, and then we need some advice on how to replace the parts.

Thank you!

Most likely it is the threaded cast iron block in the upper frame. Sometimes these can be welded with a nickel welding rod. If it is collar type insert, either round or square you might be able to find a local machine shop to make one, steel would be the best choice, the threaded block will have acme thread which is a standard for power transmission. I can’t remember if the upper portion of an Advance comes off, if it has four bolts on the upper frame, drive the pins out of the blade toggles (WITH BLADE LOWERED) and remove the bolts and lift off the upper frame, hand wheel and clamp assembly. At this point you should see the damage. Hand cutters have very few parts and disassembly/assembly should be a breeze. Good luck.
