Something for everyone

This is extremely short notice, but there will be a lot of great type available at extremely reasonable prices at The Annual Midwest & Great Northern Printer’s Fair in Mt. Pleasant, IA on Saturday morning, September 22.

A poet/printer has passed away and his family has decided that the best way to dispose of his letterpress type and equipment would be to get it into the hands of those that will really use and apprfeciate it. It will be brought to the Great Northern Printer’s Fair for this purpose.

I spent an hour doing a fast cursory look at everything and took lots of notes. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of everything that was there. We hope to have everything priced to sell that Saturday. I am thinking that cases of type will simply go in the $20 - $30 range. There is also a 5x8 Kelsey and a small proof press. There is an 8x12 C&P available, but that won’t be brought to Mt. Pleasant.

The former owner did fantastic work with these materials.
To hopefully inspire you to get to the Printer’s Fair, here is a list of some of the type that will be available for sale there:

Neuland - 60, 48 & 24 pt.

and……… did I mention he was a poet????
There are extensive runs of Bembo, Kennerley and Janson in both roman and italic, some still is foundry packages!!!!!

He also produced his own handmade paper and I am pretty confident we will have his papermaking materials at the Printer’s Fair as well.

There will also be a lot more other vendors there selling a whole cornucopia of letterpress materials.

You can go to www.oldthreshers.org and then click on Events and then click on Printer’s Fair to get more details about this event.

This whole-shop deal just came up so I am sorry about the short notice.

Updated information. There will also be papermaking items for sale as well. This printer produced his own handmade paper (which will also be for sale at the Great Northern) and the family has found his frames/squigees/etc. that he used. I have not seen any of this but am told they will be bringing it.

I will go this weekend to pick up the type, small presses, etc. so I will have a much better idea of additional typefaces to list here next week. I very hurridly jotted down the above faces when I was there briefly a few weeks ago.

It is our wish to get everything into the hands of those that will use it, so everything will be priced very reasonably.

One more update…..

The papermaking materials turned out to be silkscreening frames with a squeegee. Sorry about that, I was going with what they told me.

There is however a bunch of handmade paper that he made as well as bunches of other nice papers to print on.

Here is a list of additional type that I didn’t write down the first time:

Goudy Open 18 pt.
Goudy Heavy 30 pt.
Goudy Handtooled previously mentioned is 48 pt. - Caps
Goudy Text - 14 pt. also
Lydian 18 pt.
Banner 36 pt.
Coronet 36 pt.
Garamond Bold 30 + 24 pt. + 10 pt. italic

The Bembo fonts:
24, 14, 12, 10 and 8 pt.
14, 12 and 10 pt. italic
12/14 small caps

The Janson fonts:
30, 24, 18, and 14 pt.
36, 24, 18, and 12 italic

The Kennerley fonts:
30, 24, 14, 12, and 10 pt.
14 italic + 14 small caps

Optima fonts:
48 and 36 regular
30, 18, 12 and 8 medium
30 bold
24 black

Fonts still in original wrappers:
Kennerley 14 l.c.
Janson 14 l.c. + 14 caps
Janson Italic 14 l.c.
Bembo 14 caps + 14 l.c.
Bembo 12 caps + 12 l.c.
Goudy O.S. Italic 14

There are probably a few things I have missed here, but you get the jist of it.

Some cases have two (or more) fonts in them and will be sold as a whole case. Again, I don’t think that anything will go for more than $30 case, some much less.

I hope to see you there!

Rick-

I would like to have a table again this year, I had a great time last year and want to do this again.
How many tables have been spoken for this year?
Thank you-
Jim

Just a post mortem note. The Printer’s Fair was a great success this year. We ended up with 21 sales tables and probably a hundred or so printers present.

Everything that I had listed from the estate was sold by 10:30 in the morning so I was a happy camper. Lots and lots of great deals and I was especially pleased to see a lot of people relatively new to letterpress being able to stock up on type and supplies at reasonable prices. That is really what this is all about.

I actually grabbed the 60 pt. Neuland for myself because I realized that it was a size that I didn’t already have after I posted the initial listing. Like I said - something for everyone.

Among the things that I did see sell were three 5x8 Kelseys, a small proof press and two paper cutters.

I realized once I was there that the times had not been posted on the website. We will correct that for next year.
Thursday and Friday we were open from 8 a.m. until about 9 p.m. for people to come in and play with everything. On Saturday morning the vendors came in and set-up at 6:45 a.m. and then the doors opened for the sale at 8:00. It was fast and furious for quite a while, but eventually settled-down and was pretty much over by noon when most people packed-up and headed home.

We stayed around and didn’t close the place until around 4 p.m. on Saturday.
