Mike Anderson

I was surprised and saddened to receive in this morning’s email an invitation to the memorial service for Mike Anderson of Port Republic, Maryland. Mike passed on October 6, 2013 and was 75. He was active in the ATF organization and had given a demostration of his work of electro depositing matrices at the 2010 ATF conference in Piqua, Ohio. His service is set for Monday, November 11, 2013, 11:00 am
Chesapeake Highlands Memorial Gardens
3270 Broomes Island Road,
Port Republic, MD 20676. Among those listed as speakers is Rich Hopkins.

The ATF organization has many participants who are vitally concerned with type casting and the preservation of metal type for letterpress printing, but unfortunately most of those with the greatest knowledge and passion, like Mike, are getting up there in years. I enjoyed chatting with Mike at several ATF conferences over the years, and at each conference there are a few more missing faces.

When I first contacted Mike a couple years ago he had just gone through bypass surgery, but was doing well. He was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer just a few months ago. He cast some beautiful type for me from mats he held that had been made or acquired by Paul Duensing, but was incredibly humble about his abilities as a caster. My heart goes out to his family, and the folks that knew him best.

I’m in correspondence with Rich Hopkins and he alluded to Mike having passed away. The Google confirms, and I’m very sorry to read this.
